Central City Parallel Tunnel

The Central City Tunnel System collects runoff from downtown Minneapolis and channels it to the Mississippi River. As part of this project, a section of the existing tunnel was enlarged, and a new parallel tunnel was constructed alongside it, tripling the system’s overall capacity.

Owner: City of Minneapolis

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Prime Contractor: PCiRoads

Contract Value: $56 Million

The project involved mining a new tunnel through sandstone, shale, and bedrock approximately 80 feet below the surface. The tunnel design featured both box-shaped and cathedral-shaped sections, along with four junction structures to connect to the existing infrastructure. Construction required the removal of approximately 36,000 cubic yards of material and the placement of 24,000 cubic yards of concrete. Working in confined spaces under challenging conditions demanded meticulous planning and adaptability. PCiRoads employed a range of innovative construction and safety technologies to successfully deliver the project.
